How the AI actually works

1. Landmark detection
A neural network called a face mesh model examines your photo and locates 478 anatomically defined points: the arc of your hairline, the outer corners of your cheekbones, the corners of your jaw, the tip of your chin, and hundreds more. The model was trained on millions of annotated faces across ages, ethnicities, lighting conditions, and camera angles, and it runs in your browser through WebAssembly — which is what makes the no-upload privacy design possible.
2. Measurement
From those landmarks, the tool computes the four distances stylists have always used: face length from the top of the forehead to the chin, forehead width, cheekbone width, and jawline width, plus the taper of the chin. You can see these exact lines drawn over your photo in the results.
3. Ratio analysis
Raw distances depend on how far you were from the camera, so the measurements are converted into ratios — face length relative to cheekbone width, jaw relative to cheekbones, forehead relative to cheekbones. Ratios are scale-independent: the same face produces the same numbers whether the photo is 500 pixels wide or 5,000.
4. Classification
Each of the seven face shapes has a distinctive ratio signature. An oblong face has length far exceeding width; a triangle has a jaw that out-measures the cheekbones; a heart pairs a wide forehead with a narrow chin. Your ratios are compared against all seven profiles, weighted by how strongly each ratio distinguishes between shapes, and converted into probabilities. The seven face shapes at a glance
Oval — length about 1.5× the width, forehead slightly wider than the chin, softly tapered jaw. The most versatile shape; nearly every style works.
Round — length and width nearly equal, full cheeks, curved jaw with no hard angles. Styling adds height and definition.
Square — forehead, cheekbones, and jaw of similar width with a sharp, angular jawline. Styling either leans into the structure or softens it with waves and rounded frames.
Heart — widest at the forehead, tapering to a delicate, often pointed chin. Styling adds width at the jawline.
Diamond — dramatic cheekbones with a narrow forehead and chin; the rarest shape. Styling widens the brow and jaw while letting the cheekbones star.
Oblong — clearly longer than wide with a straight cheek line. Styling adds side volume and avoids extra height.

Getting the most accurate result
The AI is only as good as the photo you give it. Five things matter most. Face the camera directly with your head level — even a slight tilt distorts the length-to-width ratio. Pull hair completely off your face, because a covered hairline or jaw hides the landmarks the model measures; this is the single most common cause of misreads. Use soft, even, front-facing light, since hard side light throws the jawline into shadow and shifts detected points. Hold the camera at eye level and at arm's length or farther — close-up selfies introduce lens distortion that widens the nose and narrows the temples. And keep a neutral expression: a big smile raises the cheeks and can nudge a borderline oval toward round.
